Hi,
thanks for taking a look at our newsletter.
We plan to make this a monthly newsletter in which
we share health issues, office specials, as well
as some of our philanthropic efforts. While
many patients appreciate this type of
communication and find value in it, we realize
that some do not. If you prefer not to
receive future newsletters, please scroll to the
bottom of the page and click 'unsubscribe' and we
promise to never send another one to you. If
however these items interest you, let's get on
with the show. Health care is
a top priority for President-elect Obama and for
Senator Tom Daschle, Secretary-designate for
Health and Human Services (HHS). They both are
committed to health care reform that comes from
the ground up -- that's why this holiday season,
we're asking you to give us the gift of your ideas
and input.
Dr.
Wilson will he hosting a Health Care Community
Discussion at the office (8997 E. Desert Cove 1st
floor) at 7pm on December 30th. Attendance is
limited to 25 participants, so please RSVP to newsletter@drwilsonobgyn.com.
We
want to help our patients save money on hormone
pellets. For those patients who have insurance
coverage for pellets we will bill your insurance
for you. For those of you who do not have pellet
coverage, we have priced our pellets lower than
any other office in the valley. For those
patients who need a hysterectomy, we offer
minimally invasive options that will get you back
to work in a short time. Many of our patients
return to work in just a few days, minimizing
income lost and time away from your job.
If
you or a friend of yours has an emergency and
cannot get an appointment to be seen, we are
offering walk-in hours from 7-6 Monday through
Friday and 9-4 on Saturday, From December through
April. You may have to wait until a care provider
has a break in the schedule, but you will be seen
and treated.
We
have a new Aesthetician- Lori Gordon. Lori is
talented, well trained, and a master at what she
does. Please schedule a 15 minute free consult
with Lori to learn about her many offerings.
Again, we have priced our aesthetic services
reasonably to make them affordable. Lori's phone #
is 480-860-9383, check out our website at www.SkintiqueMD.com
All
of our physicians are now certified by the
American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr.
Rachel Spieldoch recently passed her boards with
flying colors. We knew she would.

Minimally
Invasive Hysterectomy |
Can't
take 6 weeks off of work but you need a
hysterectomy? Laparoscopic hysterectomy is your
answer. Laparoscopic hysterectomy is a
minimally invasive method of removing the uterus
that involves 3 small incisions, minimal
postoperative pain, and only 1 week off of work,
Laparoscopic hysterectomy can be done using
standard laparoscopic technique or can be done
robotically. Either way, the recovery is a
fraction of the time it takes to recover from a
standard open hysterectomy. Most
hysterectomies can be performed laparoscopically
in experienced hands. This includes women who have
large fibroid uteri, women who have had prior
cesarean sections, and women who have had prior
surgical procedures of many types. It is
unfortunate that 66% of hysterectomies in the
United
States are done
through a large incision, because 95% of these can
be avoided by approaching the hysterectomy
laparoscopically. Patient demand is what will
break this pattern. So if you are bleeding
heavily, experiencing significant pain with your
periods, or have any problem that leads you to
believe that you need a hysterectomy, make an
appointment with Dr. Wilson or Dr. Spieldoch. We
would be glad to discuss options with
you.

Low
Vitamin D Levels and Breast
Cancer |
|
If
your serum vitamin D level is over 30 ng/ml, you
have a 50% lower risk of developing breast cancer.
Women with vitamin D levels that fall below 30
need to consider taking 1000 IU to 2000 IU per
day. Women with more natural sun exposure do not
need to take as much, because even a small amount
of sun exposure causes the body to make vitamin D.
One study looked at women who took 1,100 IU of
vitamin D per day for 4 years compared to women
who took a placebo (sugar pill). The women who
took high doses of vitamin D lowered their risk of
cancer by 60%. Insert a "read on" link at the
bottom of your article to drive traffic to your
website. Links are tracked, allowing you to see
which articles create the most interest for your
readers.
Some
researchers dispute these findings, but vitamin D
is harmless, so why not supplement your diet with
1,000 IU of vitamin D per day? It will help
preserve bone mass as well. Vitamin D drops
are inexpensive and available at your local health
food
store.

Balance
Subcutaneous Hormone
Pellets |
We
have a new section on the drwilsonobgyn.com website about
hormones. Please log onto the following link: http://drwilsonobgyn.com/hormone_therapy/index.html
A menopausal woman with symptoms
significant enough to cause her to choose hormone
replacement therapy has many options. One of her
options is timed release subcutaneous pellets,
which have become very popular due to their
convenience and their effectiveness in eliminating
menopausal symptoms, increasing sex drive and
responsiveness, and boosting energy. Women are
raving about the pellets to their friends!
Most offices charge cash for the pellets, but
we accept insurance reimbursement, and quite a few
insurance companies, depending on the particular
plan you have, cover the pellets. Even if your
insurance does not cover this procedure, our
prices are significantly lower that most offices.
So if you are suffering with hot flashes,
night sweats, insomnia, low energy level,
moodiness, or lack of sex drive, give us a call
and set up a consult! Balance Hormone Pellets may
be your answer.

Obesity Linked to
Sleep Deprivation |
|
People
who sleep less than 7 hours per night are far more
likely to be obese. While the reason for this is
unclear, the relation between sleep deprivation
and obesity is consistent across ages and
populations studied. The studies included 600,000
individuals from around the world. Even
children who sleep fewer than 10 hours per night
were found to be twice as likely to be obese.

Heavy
Coffee Intake Associated with Development of
Rheumatoid Arthritis |
|
Drinking
4 or more cups of coffee daily seems to increase
the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis.
Specifically, the coffee habit more than doubles
the risk of progression of undifferentiated
arthritis to rheumatoid arthritis. This risk
does not decrease if the coffee is
decaffeinated
|
|
No
Gum Chewing |
If
you are planning on having a Gynecologic procedure
such as a colposcopy, biopsy, or loop excision,
spit out your gum beforehand. Although fainting
during or after these procedures is rare, gum
aspiration poses a life-threatening risk if this
does occur.
|
|
Smoking
Tied to Cognitive Decline in Middle
Age |
Smoking
is associated with a decline in reasoning ability
and with memory deficit as early as middle age.
If you quit smoking before middle age, the
risk is decreased. Current smokers were more
likely to show deficits, as well as a decline over
time in the performance of memory, reasoning, and
verbal fluency tasks, than were never smokers.
There was no relationship between the number of
pack-years of smoking and cognitive
decline.

Christmas
Giving |
|
Christmas
giving does not have to mean giving material
things. It can mean giving life and love to a
person or animal. Please consider saving the
life of a shelter animal this Christmas. Fostering
or adopting a shelter animal truly saves a life.
The animal shelters are euthanizing hundreds of
dogs and cats weekly. Many are sweet, loving pets
who have lost their homes through no fault of
their own. Many are seniors who have lived their
lives in comfortable homes and find themselves
alone and afraid in the shelter.
Please
log onto www.circlem.org or www.circlel.org for pictures of
dogs and cats for adoption. Alternatively, if you
want to rescue directly from the shelter and save
an animal off of the euthanasia list at the
shelter for Christmas, please contact me at circlelranch@gmail.com.
If you cannot foster or adopt, consider making
a contribution to Feathers Foundation/Circle L
Ranch and we will use your donation to save a life
or two for Christmas. Feathers Foundation

Dr.
Deborah Wilson signs contract with
Gyrus/ACMI
|
|
Dr.
Deborah Wilson has signed a contract with
Gyrus/ACMI to teach laparoscopic hysterectomy
nationally. Dr. Wilson and her team have conducted
5 Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy courses for
gynecologic surgeons who fly to Phoenix to learn
the procedure. The courses begin with a video
presentation for the participants on Sunday
evening followed by a question and answer session.
On Monday, the surgeons gather at Greenbaum Outpatient
Surgery
Center for a
power point presentation, suturing demonstrations,
and live surgery which they observe from a
conference room. The goal is to encourage more
gynecologists across the country to offer
minimally invasive hysterectomies to their
patients, and it is a huge success!
Dr.
Wilson and Kurt Sanders, RN First Assist, produced
the following video as a teaching tool for
gynecologists who want to learn laparoscopic
hysterectomy. You are welcome to view the video
(but it is graphic) by logging on to

Hormones
and Breast Cancer Risk
|
|
An
article in the Arizona Republic on Sunday links
the use of PremPro with breast cancer. PremPro is
a combination of equine estrogen (derived from
horse urine) and synthetic progesterone
(medroxyprogesterone acetate). In this office, we
do not encourage the use of PremPro. We do not
prescribe equine estrogen and we do not prescribe
synthetic progesterone unless the patient insists
on it. There is no evidence that breast cancer
incidence is increased with bioidentical
estradiol, which is what is prescribed in this
office in the form of pellets, patches, creams, or
pills. In fact, there is some evidence that a
woman taking bioidentical estradiol may have a
lower risk of breast cancer, but this is yet to be
proven. Only women with a uterus need to take
a combination of estrogen and progesterone. Those
without a uterus are encouraged to take estrogen
alone or with testosterone, and are encouraged to
use the bioidentical options. If we need to
use progesterone, we prescribe bioidentical
progesterone, usually Prometrium or progesterone
cream. Studies looking at any relationship between
bioidentical progesterone and breast cancer have
not been done, but there is no evidedence thusfar
to suspect that there is a link. So please do
not panic if you are taking bioidentical hormones.
There is every reason to believe that non-
synthetic progesterone is safe. We will keep
you informed as further studies are released.
